Full biography & links — Dr. Brett Dolezal
Dr. Brett Dolezal earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Kansas in 1998. His academic career began at North Dakota State University, where he served as an Associate Professor in the Kinesiology Department. During his three-year tenure, he developed and taught new undergraduate and graduate courses and founded the Center for Resistance Training Research.
In 2001, Dr. Dolezal moved to Southern California, shifting his focus from academia to the private sector by founding his personal training and fitness consulting company, The Fitness Prof. This transition allowed him to apply his extensive academic knowledge to practical, real-world scenarios, earning him recognition as an authority in personal training and evidence-based fitness. He successfully ran his business for seven years.
In 2008, Dr. Dolezal returned to academia and is now an Associate Professor of Medicine and Exercise Physiology at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. He also founded and directs the UC Fit Digital Health-Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory.
Dr. Dolezal teaches undergraduate lab interns and first-year medical and dental students through problem-based learning groups, focusing on content and skills organized around practical problems. The UC Fit Lab emphasizes a preventive model of wellness, aiming to prevent disease progression through improved health and fitness practices.
Recently, the lab was recognized as part of the Exercise is Medicine® on-campus program by the American College of Sports Medicine. Their shared vision is to foster a campus culture that integrates physical activity and exercise into daily life, promoting long-term health and wellness. Noteworthy research topics include the use of cutting-edge wearable fitness technologies and exergaming with immersive virtual reality to enhance health and performance in individuals with diseases, fitness enthusiasts, and athletes alike.
The past year, Dr. Dolezal resurrected his fitness and sport physiology consulting business, The Fitness Prof, and along with The UC Fit Lab, started collaborating with Advanced Muscle Mechanics in June 2024 to research The Launch Pad.
