The Surface Isn’t Passive Just Because It Doesn’t Move.

Grip width, elbow path, bar path, arch, programming, mobility, fatigue, and anatomy all influence pressing performance.

So does the surface beneath the athlete.

The physical interface your torso, lumbar spine, shoulders, and upper arms organize around influences how you establish position, distribute force, and repeat movement from rep to rep.

A bench doesn’t have to move to affect mechanics.

The geometry of its contact surface can influence where your body makes contact, the amount of shoulder and upper-arm clearance available, the consistency and repeatability of your setup, how effectively force is expressed into the bar, and how efficiently you maintain position throughout the set.

The surface isn’t just supporting the lift.

It’s helping define the conditions under which the lift occurs.

That does not mean a flat bench caused your discomfort or plateau. It means the surface belongs in the same honest evaluation as the technique, programming, preparation, and equipment variables you already consider.

Contact landmarks and lumbar support can give the lifter clearer physical references for recreating the same body-to-bench relationship.

How Much Depth the Lifter Can Control

Available range is only useful when the athlete can maintain position and control. Contact geometry can change the depth that feels accessible under the study or training condition.

Whether the Setup Holds Under Load

Rigid support, traction, and secure attachment can influence how much the lifter slides, drifts, or rebuilds the setup as fatigue and load increase.

The acute Launch Pad® study measured greater range of motion, mean and peak velocity, and bilateral pec activation under its specific crossover protocol. It did not measure joint forces, pain, or injury outcomes, and the numerically higher acute power result did not reach statistical significance (p = .071).

Some lifters describe the bottom position as compressed, restricted, or difficult to organize. That experience can involve anatomy, technique, load, fatigue, tissue tolerance, and other variables.

  • Keep useful grip, warmup, mobility, and technique changes.

Chest stimulus

The Shoulders or Front Delts End the Set First.

Sensation alone does not prove which muscle grew or how force was distributed. Still, a lifter who loses position or shortens usable depth may not be performing the chest-focused movement they intended.

  • Separate “feeling the pecs” from hypertrophy claims.
  • Evaluate whether position breaks before the target muscle is challenged.
  • Consider range and contact geometry together.

A plateau is not one problem with one fix. Programming, recovery, skill, effort, body mass, psychology, and equipment can all matter. The training environment is one part of that system.

The responsible read

Statistical significance helps assess whether the observed separation is difficult to explain under a no-difference model. Effect size helps describe the standardized magnitude of separation. Neither guarantees an individual response. The studies used male populations under specific supervised protocols, and the Launch Pad findings do not automatically transfer to Joint Ops™.

Specificity Has a Purpose.

When the competition, combine, team test, or personal goal is performed on a conventional flat surface, practicing that exact environment matters. The Launch Pad® is not positioned as a reason to abandon the baseline.

Keep the Standard Flat Bench for specific practice and testing. Add a different interface when a different training stimulus, contact geometry, or setup relationship serves the block.

Questions this page should answer before it sells anything

The Bench Problem, Clarified.

Are you saying the flat bench caused my shoulder pain?
No. Shoulder pain can have many causes, and this page cannot diagnose yours. The claim is narrower: the athlete-to-bench surface is one equipment variable that can influence clearance, position, range, repeatability, and contact—and it is often left out of the evaluation.
Are you saying everyone should stop using a flat bench?
No. Standard Flat Bench practice remains important when specificity, familiar testing, or competition conditions matter. AMM’s position is not “replace the flat bench.” It is “keep the baseline and add a designed training surface when the intention changes.”
Could grip width, elbow path, mobility, or programming still be the answer?
Yes. Those variables can be highly relevant. The point is to avoid treating the surface as invisible while evaluating everything else. A complete assessment considers the athlete, technique, programming, preparation, load, equipment, and symptoms together.
How is a Performance Interface different from a wider or softer pad?
Width and softness can change contact area, comfort, and perceived stability. A Performance Interface™ is defined more broadly by intentional contact geometry, positioning relationships, clearance, traction, and structural support. The Launch Pad® combines those elements in a rigid portable retrofit.
Does greater pec activation prove more muscle growth?
No. The acute study measured activation during a specific session. EMG is not the same outcome as hypertrophy. The result shows that changing the interface changed measured activation under the protocol; it does not guarantee more muscle growth for every user.
What does p < .001 mean?
Under the statistical model, if there were truly no between-group difference, a result at least this extreme would be expected less than about once in 1,000 from random variation alone. It does not mean there is a 99.9% chance every person will respond, and it does not measure how large the difference was.
What does a Hedges’ g near 4 mean?
Hedges’ g is a standardized mean-difference effect size with a correction intended to reduce small-sample bias. Values near 4 in the published trials indicate exceptionally large standardized separation between the reported groups under those protocols. They do not mean “four times better,” and they are not an individual guarantee.
Did the studies prove The Launch Pad prevents injuries or reduces pain?
No. The studies measured activation, velocity, range of motion, strength, repetition performance, and seated medicine-ball throw distance. They did not measure pain, injury incidence, or joint forces. AMM does not present them as injury-prevention or medical-treatment studies.
What should I do when benching causes pain?
Stop or modify the activity as appropriate and consult a qualified medical or rehabilitation professional when pain, injury, neurological symptoms, or other medical concerns are present. Equipment education is not a substitute for individualized clinical evaluation.
Does the research prove Joint Ops™ will produce the same outcomes?
No. The three published studies evaluated The Launch Pad®. Joint Ops™ is a related integrated platform in development, but its prototype research and validation must be evaluated on their own. No Joint Ops outcome is inferred from the Launch Pad papers on this page.
